How do I prepare my puppy for his first vet visit?

Perfect Practice Makes Perfect

With wagging tails and cheerful woofs, many pups are excited to meet new people and locations. That makes the veterinary team happy, because they adore puppies just like you.

A clinic, on the other hand, has different scents, noises, and sights than your home, and the personnel must touch puppies in very particular ways that might cause puppy anxiety. A certain number of pups are already bashful. One traumatic encounter may put even the most confident pups off going to the doctor. Here's how you can get ready for the big day.

Pet Your Dog

Turn petting into exam practice so that the technician's touch isn't a scary encounter. Pet him regularly, but also lightly touch his ears, for example. Raise his tail and briefly grasp each paw. Make head-to-tail contact a part of your evening routine for three to five days, and your puppy will be more accepting of handling at the vet's office.

Make Car Rides More Enjoyable

Turn the automobile into a puppy paradise of joy before your infant learns it's something to be afraid of. Sit in the car with your dog, motor off, and play with a squeaky toy, for example. Or spray Junior-Dog with aerosol cheese as someone else drives around the driveway. Make it a happy place, and your puppy will be less afraid of going to the vet.

Plan A Practice Run

Request that your veterinarian arrange for a "trial run" for your dog to visit the clinic and meet the personnel. Even five minutes in advance of the "actual" exam, Puppy should visit the clinic at a slack period. He'll discover that a vehicle journey finishes with people adoring him and wanting to scratch and play with him, what joy! Two or more practice runs before the exam are ideal, but even one pre-visit is extremely beneficial.[1]
